STATUS OF THE LIA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA By: Arch Sylvanus O’connor
We are pleased to report to the LIA, friends and Partners that a presentation to the AAC of the UL in support of the establishment of an architecture program at the institution proved successful. The program was received with high commendation, particularly that it is being driven by a private sector based industry initiative. The program was overwhelmingly accepted by AAC when put to vote, with no abstentions or rejections. Motion for adoption was raised, seconded, and adopted. Next step is presentation next Thursday to the University Senate for endorsement. The program is scheduled to begin next January. A workshop with the UL and LIA will be held in January after the program head takes seat. We owe a deep gratitude to Arch Nat Baker for an excellent job done in driving the process this far. So congrats to the LIA. This is the first step in ensuring quality, uniformity and the platform for the regulation of such inputs in the delivery of architecture service in Liberia. By necessity therefore, we must now forge ahead in building a strong LIA by which our profession can be nurtured and protected. In as much as the LIA as a professional institution needs to acquire statutory recognition I also believe that the basis for such, must be solidly underscored by the institution's commitment to uphold quality standards in the delivery of architecture service by its members. The best way to achieve this is through proper and recognized standards of training.
